What an Invalidating Environment Looks Like In this sense, to invalidate means to attack or question the foundation or reality of a person’s feelings. This can be done by denying, ridiculing, ignoring, or judging another’s feelings. Regardless of the means, the effect is clear: the persons feelings are “wrong.” An environment perceived as invalidating generally means that the child grows up feeling that his emotional responses are not correct or considered in the regular course of things. Over time, this can result in confusion and a general distrust of a person’s own emotions. Invalidation Can Be Subtle An invalidating environment is not the same thing as an abusive environment, although abusive relationships are certainly invalidating. Invalidation can be quite subtle and may reflect a general way of interacting. It is generally characterized by intolerance of the expression of emotional experiences, which often leads to extreme displays of emotion. Marsha M. Linehan, a borderline personality disorder clinician, and researcher proposed the idea that the development of BPD happens during the developmental years, where the child receives the message that he or she should learn to cope with emotions internally and without support from his or her parents. As a result, the child never learns how to regulate or tolerate her own emotions, and fails to learn how to solve the problems that are inciting these emotions. Some Forms of Praise May Also Be Invalidating Validation is not the same thing as praise; it is more an acknowledgment of the person, whereas praise is just a compliment. To validate someone is to acknowledge the feelings involved, regardless of whether you agree with how the other person is feeling or not. Praise addresses the action or behavior without addressing the emotion behind it. Praise can also be invalidated because although a child’s behavior is acknowledged and reinforced, the effort or negative feeling they have is not addressed. This can cause the child to feel that his total experience is not accepted, or even dismissed. An Example of Invalidation Disguised as Praise A few examples can help explain much better how validation differs from praise and how invalidation can actually be disguised as praise. A young child goes into the classroom by herself on the first day of school, although she is scared. Praising her would be a simple, “Good job!” On the other hand, “You were so brave to go in even though you were scared. It couldnt have been easy. What a good job you did,” validates the troubling feelings, remarks on the effort overcoming those feelings took, and praises the effort. However, it is possible to praise while being invalidating at the same time: “Good job. Now, don’t you see how silly you were being?” This response invalidates the feelings the child was having by calling them “silly,” despite the praising of the behavior. Hidden Invalidation Those who grow up with invalidating comments, especially those that are disguised as praise and support, can find it difficult to see the difference between these comments and validating comments. Not only does the child feel the discomfort that comes from invalidation disguised as praise, but those not directly involved in the dynamics may not recognize this either. Other adults, instead of recognizing the impact these invalidating comments disguised as praise may have on a child, might dismiss the resultant insecurity or sadness of the child as over-sensitivity on the part of the child rather than lack of thoughtfulness on the part of the parent. Perception Is Also a Factor   It is important to remember that people tend to experience relationships and interactions differently. This means that what one person experiences as an invalidating environment is not necessarily experienced as such by another. It is possible that individual temperaments affect a person’s general sensitivity to invalidation, but everyone has times when they are more vulnerable or sensitive. It is important to note, however, that invalidationâ€"as it relates to the development of borderline personality disorderâ€"is not a periodic experience, but a pervasive one. It is not one invalidating experience that leads to BPD but rather a complex and repeated exposure to situations in which feelings and thoughts are simply considered unimportant.

Many dont realize that receiving your high school diploma can open few doors and receiving a diploma/degree from college opens multiple doors. My parents were of proud of her for receiving their diplomas. My sister had a more difficult time getting where she is now. She ended in the same path as my mother, ended pregnant at a young age but she didnt let her situation get in her way of receiving her education. My sister got more motivation from her daughter to give her a better life. She had to be a mother while being a student also and it wasnt easy but she had support from her husband and family. My sister is a role model for me. She has always tried to steer me to the right path and has always been there for me whenever I needed her. Yesenia is currently a medical assistant working in a clinic working with patients who are fighting cancer. My sister received scholarships and she set high standards for my siblings and I. Throughout elementary and middle school I have always been an excellent student and loved school. The beginning of freshman year I was under a lot of pressure to achieve more than what my older siblings achieved. I was always the one that received better grades and always received certificates from teacher. My parents never thought I would have any problems in school. Growing up my parents would always brag about me to their friends and family. Not only did my parents set high expectations for me but family and friends were expecting me to excel as well. I felt like I couldnt disappoint if I kept being the student I was however, I was a disappointment for my parents my freshman and sophomore year. I also set a bad example for my younger brother. I started skipping class, giving attitude to my teac hers, and failing my classes. My family was very surprised by my behaviour because I have always been the type of student that would do my work quietly and be shy around others. My attitude continued throughout freshman and sophomore year. I would have parent meetings with my counselor but I still continued with my behaviour. I received probation and had to attend court towards the end of freshman year. During my freshman and sophomore year I simply didnt care about where I was going and gave up on my goals for my future. I was scared that I wouldnt succeed my familys expectations so I just gave up. I would carry this anger towards my siblings who had already graduated which did not help with my relationship with my older brother because we have never really ever had a brother-sister bond, it has always been like strangers. My sister and I talked about my behaviour and I couldnt quite explain to her why I was behaving the way I was. I didnt want her to think I was weak or that I was scared of failing. I dont like showing emotions. I know my sister honestly cares for me. I realized she wants me to be someone in life when she invited a few of my cousins that I grew up with over to my house. My cousins never graduated high school along with most of my family. My sister truly was the first to have graduated. It was sorta of a intervention and they talked to me about why they didnt continue to school and how they regretted it. There was foul language used in the conversation but it was all love. They explained to me that what I was doing isnt going to get me anywhere in life and that it wasnt too late to fix my problem. Im very grateful that my sister was helping me out because I never realized until that conversation that I was letting my education go to waste and myself. How far can I go without having an education ? Nowhere to be quite honest. For me personally, I have always seen having a education as a foundation by which I can build a career. I want to have a career and show my family that I worked hard towards a better future. I would like to be a role model. I seen and heard stories about young girls who arent allowed to go to school. These young girls are being fo rced to marriage at a young age and are worth less than a cow. I have a golden ticket that many dont get to have and I am not seeing the value of it. Entering Junior year I decided to be the student I was back in elementary and middle school. It was not easy and I didnt have a clue of the difficulties that I would have to overcome along the way. I still struggle to this day on how I became a more productive student. Ive made improvements with my grades and attendance that I was released from probation. I gave up my saturdays and school breaks to make up missing credits. I was a different person then and most people get surprised when I have to explain why I attend saturday school, winter intersession and spring intersession .Whenever Im absent from school I email my teachers asking them for my missing assignments or lessons. I have always loved school but once I entered high school I got nervous and scared. I had these high expectations from my family and I carried this fear that I wont be successful in school. I learned that I shouldnt let my fear of what could happen make nothing happen. I still have to work on a fear of mine which is public speaking which is something I struggle with. It has affected my grade in my english and spanish class but I been working on it. I also made improvements on my life outside of school. There is a program I will be joining that my probation officer recommended me to take. The program helps you stay on track for graduation, set up job interviews (both fake and real), how to dress for job interviews, how to fill out a resume, etc. I regret the decisions I made entering freshman year, all I can do is learn from my mistakes and move forward.

You see, writing a critique is very different from reading one.A critique is usually written and performed by a professional literature critic. The critic analyzes the work of art or literary piece and asks some questions about the specific aspects of the work. For example, if a student wants to write a critique on Shakespeare's King Lear then the critique would usually be written in the form of an essay analyzing the theme of betrayal.The professional literature critic will use common sense as the basis for his critique. He or she will ask themselves 'Is this piece of work about betrayal?' and 'What specific aspects of the betrayal are there?'For instance, let's say that a student has chosen a book about poetry as a subject for his or her self-analysis. The student might say that he wants to write a critique on the theme of betrayal because the book is too detailed abou t what has happened to the protagonist in the past. This is not a good idea because if you do not have any common sense, it may just sound like you are whining or criticizing the author for being vague.On the other hand, if the student has used common sense, he or she might use examples like 'The character who lies in wait for someone to come and steal his wife and children...the character who betrays the lover and steals his daughter from the gallows.' The audience are watching the play knowing that it is set many years ago; this gives J. B. Priestley an advantage to use dramatic irony throughout the play, which allows him to make some of the characters look ridiculous. A sharp ring of the front door bell Priestley uses this technique to bring the play to a pause, whilst Mr Birling stops in his tracks to soon question who is at the door. This quickly adds tension to the scene making the characters to panic, in a sense, to wonder who is knocking at such a time. Soon enough both audience and characters come to find it is Inspector Goole. At once he creates an impression of massiveness, solidity and purposefulness. Priestly uses the way the Inspector is characterised to create impact from the moment he enters. As soon as Inspector Goole arrives he swiftly has power over the atmosphere, creating a tense yet calm ambience of the household. Looking hard at the person he addresses before actually speaking The Inspector intimidates each character by simply studying them before speaking. This gives the impression he has a lot of power, creating a big stage presence, before he has even spoken. As he begins questioning the characters, Mr Birling is quick to announce that he was Lord Mayor two years ago and Im still on the bench to try and intimidate the Inspector. Answering with a simply Quite so it soon appears that the Inspector has no interest in what Mr Birling has to say. Carrying on the Inspector tells the characters he would Like some information Two hours ago a young women died in the infirmary. Shed been taken there this afternoon because shed swallowed a lot of strong disinfectant They did everything they could for her But she died. Suicide, of course. After his sharp, rather shocking news to the Birlings, Mr Birling, being his usual obnoxious self, is quick to respond impatiently to the inspector. Telling the Inspector, Yes, yes horrid business this creates a sense of arrogance coming from Mr Birling, showing he doesnt really care what the Inspector has to say and questioning why he is being told if he isnt even concerned with such news. The Inspector is not friendly to the family and this is soon discovered when he answers to the Birlings using a short and blunt tone. The Inspector uses this way of speech to show he has not arrived for a friendly chat and is simply at the house for business. He brushes off the sarcastic comments of Mr Birling, and continues by Cutting through, massively and carrying on his with his account or Eva Smith. He cleverly does this before Mr Birling continued to question the Inspector and became completely arrogant to what the Inspector has to say. Priestly created the Inspector very cunningly to show that people like Mr Birling, are soon made to look preposterous in what they are saying, which soon makes both characters and the audience begin to listen to the I nspector. Using the Inspector as his own voice, Priestley can get across his own right wing views and opinions on society, to then educate the audience on community and how we should all begin to look out for one another. This creates a dramatic impact as he soon begins to put across his socialist views, which teaches the audience, before it is too late, like in the play. The Inspector is still able to control the situation in a composed manner, talking Calmly to the family, but still having complete control on the whole atmosphere and mood of the room. This shows how dominant and controlling the Inspector is on the family, with only using speech. He walks straight out, leaving them staring, subdued and wondering. The Inspectors dramatic exit brings the whole play to a standstill. We then speculate, what happens to him next, and begin to wonder what the Inspectors reason was for knocking at the Birlings. On his dramatic exit, the Inspector leaves the family stunned and in shock, with no second thoughts of what has just happened. Before he exits, the Inspector reminds each family member of what they have done to help kill Eva Smith. Reminding them that they all shared responsibility for Evas Death. This adds the final touch of guilt to the family, as they are then left to think and reminisce of the consequences of their actions. Both audience and characters are then left in silence which adds dramatic anxiety to the whole theatre. Not knowing whether the Inspector will come back as a consequence, or if he is gone for good. Priestley cleverly created this atmosphere as to make the audience then start thinking about the characters actions, and the way they deal with the situation being placed in front of them. This then takes us back to everything the family had said, and to Mr Birlings speeches before the Inspector arrived and interrupted. Making the audience continue discussing between themselves after watching the play about what Mr Birling had said and who they believe the Inspector really was, makes the well made play fill Priestleys expectations. At the end of An Inspector Calls Priestley has very ingeniously got across his views on second wing politics and social responsibility, using the Inspector as his own voice.

The sound from the cars and the people create a nice little harmony that one could easily lay down and relax to. Not too far off in the distance I see the old softball stadium. And scattered around the park are huge oak trees. I can also see the playground, and the muddy path that the runners take. Now, the clouds are breaking and shinning just a hint of sun into this wonderful picture. The temperature is one that is dreamed of on the hottest and the coldest days. It is not to hot, and it is definitely not to cold. This new sunlight seems to change the color of everything. The grass which was once a forest green has now turned into green. The trees which seemed dark at first, now actually resembles brown bark and green leaves. Even the metal fence that goes around the softball stadium has turned from grey into silver. There seems to be more movement now, and I hear a bir d chirp every so often. The sun seems to be playing hide-and-go-seek with the clouds. I could definitely spend all day at this heavenly place. The clouds imprison the sun. The trees, in the breeze, shake like little kids on their first day of school. The sound of the cars and people remind you of how busy the world is. An old abandoned softball stadium looks as though it hasna t seen a player in years. The playground, that once held the smiling faces of children, now too is as lonesome as an old widow. The rain has left behind puddles. The mud, as if it were quicksand, waits for peoplea s feet. The mix of the humid air and the smog from the cars seems to clog my nose. This dark day makes me feel like I am lost in eternity. The icy wind whistles through the finger like branches of the bare trees, a light covering of snow lying heavily on their extremities. Brittle autumn leaves dance dramatically around in a great swirl of colour . Children are skating on the icy surface of the pond making large cracks like gaping wounds. Sledges hurtle down the piebald hills, rosy faces glowing and laughing, amidst the flurry of ice particles. People scurry along, their hats and scarves protecting them from the blustery weather, the sallow sun casting a weak shadow across the deserted play area. Those who can no longer brave the weather take shelter in the cosy warmth of the cafe. Hot drinks are welcoming against the arctic elements outside. They chat about the inclement conditions, all of them looking forward to the first awakening signs of spring. A lone swan walks gracefully towards children throwing bread, its perfect white plumage camouflaged against the crisp whiteness of the snow. Robins perch on the trees waiting for any scraps or crumbs they may find, their feathers dishevelled from the breeze. The gates on the tennis courts are locked, they lie deserted and unused waiting for the first players of the year to arrive. The bowling green and crazy golf have an eerie silence about them, they lie like a forgotten town, deserted and derelict. I leave my lonely bench now. The cold is seeping through into my bones, the blood icy through my veins. My thick coat pulled tightly to keep me a little warmer. Battle Royal Ralph Ellison Analysis Essay Rope-a-dope is a precarious boxing strategy first introduced by Muhammad Ali against George Foreman in the Heavyweight Championship match held on October 30, 1974, in Kinsasha, Zaire. The match is best known as the Rumble in the Jungle because of the fiery action among the two great heavyweight fighters of that era. As told on his official website www.ali.com, Ali was the better technical fighter while Foreman the bruiser packed an unyielding harder punch. During the first round of the bout, Ali scored several technical hits but Foreman remained unfazed. Throughout the next three rounds, Ali changed his strategy, frequently lying against the ropes, allowing a determined Foreman to exhaust himself by throwing repeated ineffective punches to Alis protective arms. Confusing the commentators and the judges, Ali laid on Foreman repeatedly forcing him to hold up his weight while continuing to thrust pin-point blows. By round five, Foreman was exhausted while Ali had taken every opportunity to land several choice blows to Foremans face and head when the big fighter let his guard down. Finally, in the eighth round, Foremans punches were too futile and Ali knocked him out. Twenty-two years prior to the use of this strategy by Ali, Ralph Ellison mastered a similar literary version. Ellisons royal fight is evident when in The Battle Royal the narrator says, It took me a long time and much boomeranging of my expectations to achieve a realization everyone else appears to have been born with: That I am nobody but myself. But first I had to discover that I am an invisible man (1)! Here, he shares his belief that African Americans have to battle for an equal playing field when Caucasians are born in an equal arena. If we clear away the conceptions of his essay Battle Royal and begin to examine the references with an eye to the subtext, a largely unrecognized place for the essay emerges within a more sociological and materialist reading of the African American plight in the post Emancipation Proclamation era. Christopher Butler (Oxford: Clarendon Press, 1994) states that 1914 was the beginning of The Modernist Period in literature where the majority of widely published works came from a select group of predominantly white male writers. Furthermore, Allain Lockes The New Negro chronicled the how and why a renaissance of black art was establishing itself in Harlem. In short, the 1920s and 1930s were extraordinary years in American culture. Two men key in paving the way for the breakthrough for black writers during the Harlem Renaissance were Langston Hughes and Richard Wright. The book Ralph Ellison: A Biography by Arnold Rampersad describes how Ellison wanted to be Renaissance Man at an early age which explains his move to Harlem upon leaving Tuskegee Institute without a degree. His goal was to become a great musician. After several odd jobs, he met Richard Wright who noticed Ellisons writing talent. Robert G. OMeally states that the two authors (Hughes and Wright) encouraged Ellison to pursue a career in fiction, and it would be in this medium that Ellisons talents would reach fruition. In Battle Royal, Ellison shows us how important his personal life and the context of the era had been in creating a work of fiction that speaks not only to African Americans sense of dignity but to the human circumstance and desired equality of all men. Ralph Ellison wrote Battle Royal during a time of concentrated American social unrest. The main character in essay Battle Royal is an educated student who has recently graduated and is to deliver a speech in front of a crowd of prominent white men They were all there-bankers, lawyers, judges, doctors, fire chiefs, teachers, merchants. Even one of the more fashionable pastors (6). The spectrum represented by the white men is a symbol that every vocation of protecting and serving our society presents a battle for African Americans. Ellison also reveals to the reader how the white men portray the black males as a means of brutal entertainment. This is a free-for-all battle that involves ten combatants sealed in morale conflict for the pu rpose of financial gain. Therefore, the blacks are competing for the money of the whites who wont offer any of the civil liberties that an equal race deserves. Placing the narrator in the fight allows him to be objectified and disrespected which adds a first person account of this story. The narrators unyielding fortitude to deliver his speech is the central theme of the essay. The sub-textual emphasis of the black mans humility explains why Ellison closely followed the footsteps of Washington for a time. Ellison even makes a direct reference to Booker T. Washington and the title of his novel Invisible Man in the story when, after he stresses the importance of the narrators speech, he writes In those pre-invisible days I visualized myself as a potential Booker T Washington (5). Humility and the importance of social responsibility are both objectives contrary to the dual nature of the grandfathers curse. However, the narrators dream involving his grandfather proves that the actual wo rth of the curse has nothing to do with its words. In fact, in reference to the value of keep up the good fight (3) as said by the dying grandfather, the narrator in the last line of the essay First I had to finish college.) (107) Social conflict and upheaval because of the disenfranchisement of the African American had become commonplace especially, during the late 19th and early 20th century. The Black community basically had two major activists held sway over them during this period, and both had articulated contrasting dogmas for the success and social progress of the black race in America when whites continued to dominate and segregate the African Americans through outdated grandfather clauses and legal barriers as stated by Henry Louis Gates, Jr. The two notions were that blacks could either succeed by acceptance of their social station and be viewed as cooperative with the white society, or fight their oppression through activism. This poem accurately describes the contrast in approaches of the two men to the advancement of black people after reconstruction. For the first time in the storied and hypocritical history of The United States of America, we have an African American President. If Dr. Martin Luther King was witnessing the visible character punches being thrown at Barack Obama today, he would tell him to persevere so that one day he will be judged by the content of his character and not by the color of his skin. Now, I see why Ralph Ellison was not sold on the fundamental new awareness of the so called modernism authors opening the door of tolerance in America as wide as they regarded. Undoubtedly, Ellisons no-nonsense serious fiction about blacks added a new dimension, a new voice, if you will, to modern American writing.

â€Å"How does Fitzgerald tell the story in chapter 1 of ‘The Great Gatsby? † Fitzgerald opens the first chapter introducing us to Nick Carroway, who is clearly of first person narration and he is telling the story from the future. By telling the story as though it has already occurred, Fitzgerald has created the Illusion that his maln character has already experienced the events that are unfolding. This ensures that Nick is a retrospective narrator throughout the book but also obviously a bias story teller.Fitzgerald makes it known that Nick has already met all the characters and knows hem and their story, he openly has his own personal Judgements and opinions of them, also making It clear he is going to be a bias narrator, giving out inaccurate and one-sided information to the reader. The chapter also tells us about Nick's life in New York when he lived in 1922 and his life in West Egg. Fitzgerald's purpose of chapter one is mainly to introduce the characters of the bo ok and to drop hints and revelations for the events in the rest of the book, such as suggesting themes of class and characterisation of Gatsby.The chapter also presents us the relationship etween Tom and Daisy Buchanan. Furthermore, the housing is deeply described by Fitzgerald, â€Å"A sunken Italian garden, a half-acre of deep, pungent roses, and a snub- nosed motor boat that bumped the tide offshore†. This presents an Image of wealth and the strong themes of money linked with social class due to the immense description of the expansive home Tom and Daisy took for granted. The author's description of the houses shows the difference clearly between Nick's home which hed â€Å"Rented In one of the strangest communities†, Inexpensive In comparison toTom and Daisy's house which was a representation of old money. This is again also shown in chapter one with Gatsbys home which Nick had described as a â€Å"mansion†, Implying that his house Is huge and could possibly link to Gatsby's personality from what we know of him. This shows that Gatsby has new wealth and that he simply bought his mansion to fit his stereotyped personality and ego. Fitzgerald still telling the story from Nicks point of view, makes the audience aware that Nick is new into this lifestyle, and that he is not particularly wealthy within his own devices.However I think It's clear from the start that Nick will have to change his personality also In order to fit in with everyone else and his friends. This is due to the fact that when Nick leaves the Buchannan's' house, he is â€Å"confused and a little disgusted. † This is aimed at the attitude Daisy has towards Tom's evident promiscuity and blatant affair he has going on with a girl from New York as Daisy is aware and doesnt show any sign of caring that her husband Is having an affair as she Is not making any effort to stop it.He's confused as to why Daisy doesn't simply leave Tom and find someone else, but as I said he has yet to adjust to the mind-set of the rich and foolish upper- class. This Is done well by Fitzgerald however, as It gives Nicka sense of lower status In comparison to his friends in that before he becomes Involved them he must first adjust his personality. Not only does this work on a human level, but it also reveals more about Nick's character as he explained how genuine and non-judgemental he completely fake in front of these friends he has made.This can Introduce and theme of people being fake'. The author starts off the story in chapter one, talking to the reader through Nick, â€Å"Whenever you feel like criticizing any one†¦ ]ust remember that all the people in this world haven't had the advantages that you've had. † – This is the first case of Fitzgerald pointing towards the reader and asking them to look at themselves. This is because of the fact that we all Judge our friends, our familV'How does Fitzgerald tell the story in chapter 1 of ‘The Gre at GatsbV? , and other members f community in our mind, but we do not all have the courage to come out and say it. Nick does not talk of his opinions as far as I know from chapter one to his friends, the story tells us all his accurate Judgements of the other characters. However I don't think we can trust his completely as he is bias. I think Fitzgerald has purposely done that to leave a mystery of Nick from what I can tell from chapter one alone, but also Nick can be considered reliable as he speaks his opinions to the readers and doesn't hold back what's on his mind.Nick is portrayed to us as an honest guy in the first hapter, however I think he is of the theme fake' a he is being nice to the people he has met so far despite the Judgements he has formed of them. So he gets along with everyone in public but Judges them in private which is only revealed to us readers. I think that Nick is a very real and genuine character, and that Fitzgerald has created an accurate depiction of the average American man. He isn't born to old money, and isn't born in to new money, he's Just born into a normal family, making his own judgements.Even though Nick can be considered a secret hypocrite. And even though he claims to be appalled and disgusted by the ways of the rich and upper- classes due to the cheating that goes on, on Tom's behalf, it fascinates him, and he wants to know more. I think that this is where Fitzgerald has made us somewhat ‘like' Nick as he is Just a normal person trying to change to fit in with his surroundings and peers. So I think that Fitzgerald is telling us the story in chapter one through Nick as us readers can relate to him being a regular person, so in some ways we live the story and there is a part of Nick in all of us.
